* Brent Wood will be telling us about NIWA's Marine Data Portal - it's
based on a suite of Open Source applications, including Silverstripe
(CMS), PostGIS (spatial database), Geonetwork (metadata catalogue),
mapserver (spatial data web services), Openlayers (web map client).
And it runs on Linux servers.

* Martin Krafft will be returning to tell us about his war against
web trackers and techniques he's using to minimise his browsing
footprint on a day to day basis.

web trackers and techniques he's using to minimise his browsing
  footprint on a day to day basis.

* Tom Eastman will be talking about Hashicorp Vault - a tool that
“secures, stores, and tightly controls access to tokens, passwords,
certificates, API keys and other secrets in modern computing”. In
this talk, he'll describe what it does, and how it does it, all
while taunting the live demo gods.

* Dmitry Shiltsov will be talking about teaching kids programming with
Scratch & robots! He also aims to bring along some robots to demo.

And remember, I'm always keen to hear from people who would like to
speak at an upcoming meeting.

Hi All

Thank you to last night's speakers - Martin and Michael. A couple of
really interesting talks and some great conversations around them.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday the 19th of June. As I mentioned

Martin Krafft will be talking about matrix.org, which is a Free,
federated chat protocol sometimes dubbed XMPP 2.0. It has built-in
end-to-end encryption, rich media support, video and voice conferencing
abilities, as well as integrations and bridges to other protocols and
tools.

Michael Fincham — A Ramble Through BeyondCorp with some Ideas You Could
Steal. This talk is an overview of Michael's experiences so far trying
to build something like Google's BeyondCorp access control
infrastructure, using free software and some of his own code. He'll talk
about the path to BeyondCorp, strong user authentication, trying to do
host authentication with osquery, and some considerations for non-web
protocols.

Hi All

I firstly need to say a big thank you to Hamish and Donovan, our two
speakers at the April WOSSAT meeting. And of course thanks to everyone
who came along, asked questions and contributed to the discussions.

Following Donovan's talk on Keybase, I've set up a WOSSAT "team". It's
an open team so you can join without needing admin approval. Feel free

The next meeting will be on Thursday the 17th of May.

That's right *Thursday*. We're going to try out alternating between
the 3rd Tuesday and the 3rd Thursday of the month. This allows us to
include people who have a conflicting Tuesday commitment. So if you've
invited friends or colleagues in the past and they couldn't make it,
consider sharing this message with them to let them know.

At the May meeting, Martin Kraftt will be speaking about matrix.org. He
provided me with this teaser for hi talk:

Martin will be talking about matrix.org, which is a Free,

happened to "Open access guiding principles" and the UFB
initiative?

Hi WOSSAT mailing list subscribers

This is the first message to the mailing list, so I thought I'd mention
how I see this list being used.

First and foremost it will be a place where details of upcoming
meetings will be posted. I'd envisage there will be a couple of these
messages each month - one a couple of weeks in advance and one the day
before the meeting.

After each meeting I'll try and post a quick round-up of what went on,
with links to related material where possible.

Finally, this list will become whatever the subscribers want it to be.
It's open for anyone to post to. I hope other people will join in
with:

* post-meeting discussion of topics from talks and conversations
* volunteering to speak at a future meeting
* suggesting topics they'd like someone to speak about
* other stuff likely to be of interest to WOSSAT attendees

Obviously we'll have to grow our subscriber base a significant amount
before any of that will happen.

Please be respectful in your interactions with other people on the
list.  If you have any concerns about on-list behaviour please contact
me directly.

Make sure you've shared links with friends and colleagues who you think
